The war in Syria is entering a new phase where the external powers have coalesced into sectors of control. In northern Syria, Russia has the Syria-Turkish border west of the Euphrates; Turkey has the border areas east of the Euphrates; and, the U.S. is in the eastern security zone along with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and local tribes.

Iran has attacked again. The physical targets were oil infrastructure in Saudi Arabia. The actual target was the United States and Europeans as a warning of what they can do if they do not receive the bribes they have demanded. This must not go unpunished.
Qatar must earn a new path forward

President Trump wants to see an end to the Gulf states disagreement and also move Qatar further away from Iran. There is a possibility those two things can work together, but that requires actual changes and substantive actions from the Qataris.The rise of an Islamist alliance between Iran, Turkey and Qatar is contrary to U.S. strategic interests as well as the security and stability of the region. Qatari money fuels this and they need to end that. It has partly been a counterweight to the ongoing blockade, but also as recognition that these three countries are the vanguard of militant Islamism.
Iranian attacks should draw a US response

The US has a longstanding interest in free and safe passage from the Gulf through the Straits of Hormuz. Although the attacks on four tankers did not include any US-flagged vessels, they certainly threatened the safety of all vessels in the region. If Iran is calculating that this does not constitute a crossing of a clear red line, they are mistaken.
