Time to Bring the Pain to Iran

Iran has attacked again. The physical targets were oil infrastructure in Saudi Arabia. The actual target was the United States and Europeans as a warning of what the Mullahs will do if they do not receive the bribes they have demanded. This must not go unpunished.

We cannot capitulate to this ongoing blackmail and aggression. This is not about Saudi Arabia or any of the countries whose tankers were attacked. It is a direct attempt by Iran to stop the US from using the crushing maximum pressure sanctions and return to the deadly deal that guaranteed them a legitimized nuclear program. We are long past the point where the answer to that should be a rain of incoming Tomahawk missiles turning IRGC tools of terror into smoking rubble.

The Mullahs have been cagey in their months-long parade of provocations only once attacking a US asset directly in shooting down a drone. Mostly they have attacked third part vessels in the Gulf and oil facilities in Saudi Arabia so they could claim this was the act of their proxies, the Houthis. But no one paying attention believes this is the case. We must show them this flimsy façade of deniability will not protect them.

This does not mean a war with Iran, but it should mean military action. This does not require the President to get permission from Congress, quite the contrary. He is directly empowered under his Article II authority in the Constitution to act as Commander in Chief when US interests are threatened.

The free travel of shipping through the Gulf as well as the production and distribution of energy is definitely a US interest. As is limiting the ability of Iran to commit terrorist acts with impunity. It is absurd to say the US should leave this to the other nations which have had their assets attacked. We are the only ones who can legitimately take action and these attacks are directed at us, albeit obliquely.

President Trump has consulted with the Saudis and we are jointly preparing a response. This is a proper way to deal with this. We were both attacked, and we should show solidarity as well as a price to be paid for this reckless and entirely unacceptable activity.

It is time to bring the pain.
